A breast augmentation procedure can be a perfect solution for women who are unhappy with the size of their breasts, women who have lost volume due to pregnancy and breastfeeding, or women whose breasts are unevenly sized may benefit from a breast augmentation treatment. Dr. Paletta often does not require drains for augmentations, and they usually take less than 2 hours. To ensure the best results, and to expedite the healing process, it is important to follow your surgeon’s aftercare instructions.
You will be provided with full aftercare instructions before you are discharged. In the meantime, here are a few general guidelines for breast augmentation aftercare.
● Avoid underwire bras. You’ll want to steer clear of underwire bras for at least six weeks following your surgery. The reason for this is simple: The underwire can irritate your breasts and potentially inflame the incision site. Stick with sports bras or light support bras instead.
● Stay out of the water. Showers are fine, but you should avoid bathtubs, swimming pools, and hot tubs until your incision site is completely healed. Submerging in water may introduce bacteria to your incision site, potentially causing infections and other complications.
● Don’t drink or smoke. Until your body is completely healed, it is recommended that you avoid tobacco products as well as alcohol. (Ideally, you’ll avoid smoking indefinitely; you can resume moderate drinking within a few weeks, once your surgeon gives you the green light.)
● Sleep on your back. During your recovery, it is crucial to get plenty of rest. Try to sleep on your back, as sleeping on your stomach or even your side may cause your implants to shift or to droop. Additionally, sleeping on your stomach may simply feel uncomfortable.
● Avoid vigorous exercise. Your surgeon will likely advise you to avoid strenuous physical activity, including heavy lifting, for several weeks. Exercising prematurely can increase your risk of bleeding and other complications.
