Cancer and other trauma can alter the size, shape, and overall look of one or both breasts or can leave an individual without a breast at all. A breast reconstruction is designed to restore both the breasts and the patient’s confidence in just one procedure.
Candidates for breast reconstruction are typically those who have had their breasts removed through a mastectomy or as a result of trauma.

A breast reconstruction can take anywhere between 1 to 8 hours depending on a number of variables and the technique being used. A breast may be reconstructed using the patient’s own tissue and skin, artificial implants or a combination of both.
After the breast is reconstructed using one of several techniques, the nipple and areola are then reconstructed as well.
A breast reconstruction requires some recovery time in the hospital and a caretaker may be needed for a few days upon your return home. Pain medications may be used to alleviate discomfort, and it is recommended that you wear a support bra for several weeks following the procedure.
