What Surgical Procedures are Covered by Insurance?

It’s exhausting dealing with medical issues and deterioration in your physical appearance. However, you don’t have to manage it alone. Your plastic surgeon is here to help you attain a higher overall quality of life and will work with your insurance group to ensure coverage for as many procedures as possible.

This leads us to the question: What is covered by insurance in most general cases?

Thankfully, we sat down with Dr. Paletta and got the answers to most questions about insurance coverage and plastic surgery procedures. Read on to learn more about what exactly is covered by insurance – in most cases!

What types of surgical procedures are covered by insurance?

Generally, when inquiring about plastic surgery or insurance, your surgeon will evaluate the risks, benefits, and overall quality you will experience in each case before making a decision. However, some procedures get approved more commonly than others. These include:

• Breast reductions: These are approved upon completion of medical prerequisites

• Vision blockage resolution: This is also a type of surgery that is commonly covered to promote total eyesight restoration.

• Septoplasty: This involves adjusting the septum to allow for better breathing. These are covered more frequently than rhinoplasty, which adjusts your appearance.

• Panniculectomy: This excess abdominal skin removal is rarely covered unless it severely compromises the quality of life.

Digging deeper: What factors affect coverage?

Below, we discuss what factors affect coverage for specific surgical procedures in Savannah, Richmond Hill, & Rincon areas:

1. Tummy Tucks & Abdominal Surgery

Tummy tucks are a frequently requested surgery. However, these are rarely covered, as they are considered cosmetic. Peniculectomies may be, however, if deemed medically necessary to preserve overall health and quality of life.

2. Breast Reduction

This is commonly covered so long as there is documentation of symptoms of escalation. These include neck, head, and back pain, pinched nerves, and failure of conservative medical intervention that would indicate a need for breast reduction.

3. Eyelid Surgery

Insurance may cover Eyelid surgery depending on the cause (i.e., droopy brow), and risk assessment will commence with a visual field test and analysis.

4. Nasal Surgery

Nasal surgery, with the exception of septoplasty, is not generally covered as it is deemed cosmetic. A septoplasty is designed to address breathing difficulties from septum-related disorders and does not affect the appearance of your nose.
